Side effects

Yesterday I posted about the foods I miss since I can’t eat corn or wheat. Today, I figured I’d balance it out by sharing with you the positive “side effects” the change has had.

1. I get ideas

I used to get these fabulous ideas for things I could do: creative birthday gifts, DIY projects around the house, new recipes, get togethers with friends, weekend plans. I think eventually my brain got tired of these ideas being rejected that it just stopped having them. I used to feel so guilty when I would come up with such a cool idea and then not have the energy to go through with it. I am finally starting to get these ideas back…and I’m doing them!

2. My apartment gets clean

I won’t say that it IS clean because I’ve been in sort of a slump. The pain from my knee kept me awake at night for a whole week. Pair that with last weekend’s adventure and I’ve been feeling less than motivated. I know, however, that it is temporary and will pass (that in itself is an amazing feeling!). And probably, with any luck, by this afternoon, our apartment will at least feel clean again.

3. I want to wear high heels

I have so many pairs of heels that I love. And in the past few years, it’s just seemed like such a pain, so much more effort than I could afford to wear them….now I just need my dang knee to finish healing.

My fabulous wedding shoes may see the outside of their box again!

4. I’ve started writing again

I think I mentioned this one before. I stopped working on my large writing project just after we got engaged. I told myself I’d be too busy planning our wedding, but beyond that there was a little nagging feeling that I just didn’t have the energy to produce anything good. And that’s partly my own self-loathing speaking (fueled by a number of rejections of my first novel… “Can I really do this?!”), but somehow, I’ve found the courage and energy to pound out some words and have started a fresh draft of my current project. Wish me luck.

5. I want to redecorate

I won’t claim to be the world’s most amazing decorator. Hell, I won’t claim to be one ounce of good at it at all, but ever since I was a kid, I’ve had this amazingly keen desire to redecorate, rearrange rooms every few months or so. I was actually a little hesitant to move into my first apartment after college because my bedroom was too small to move the furniture around. Could I really live like that? Well, I managed. And again, our room is too small to do much moving around. But for a while there, I had no desire to make changes at all, and while I still can’t move the furniture, I have this desire to freshen up the decor and find myself often cruising House Beautiful and numerous home decor blogs in my free time.

6. I want to be my best self

And I feel motivated to make the changes necessary. Not major changes. Just little things like making time for exercise every day (and not just when I already have time for it). Taking time for MYSELF every day…to read, to write, to watch a television show. And sticking with my new diet…lifestyle really…because that’s what makes all of the items on this list happen.

Prior to finding out about these allergies, I wasn’t sure I’d ever be able to feel “normal” again. I was sure there was a good possibility I would just be tired forever, unable to muster the energy to get through every day. The “side effects” have been amazing. Now I believe there’s a good possibility I may actually find a bit of contentment in my life, a bit of happiness that lingers rather than falling away as soon as it arrives.

Have you ever been so discouraged by something you can’t control that it feels like it may never go away? How did you cope with that?

Photo-a-day Catch-up

I know I said I’d post a photo every day, but you know how I am about posting anything on the weekends, so I’ve got a bit of catching up to do today. I did, however, get all of my photos taken! Enjoy!

Friday: something you wore today

These are some of my favorite flats. They’re the most comfy ones I think I own (but they’re Dr. Scholls, so who’s surprised?). Sadly, they’re starting to lose it, I think. They may not be with us much longer….

Saturday:Fun!

What’s more fun than frozen yogurt?! I got plain old vanilla and topped it with strawberries, mango, brownie pieces, yogurt chips, mochi and a couple of chocolate covered gummy bears. It was delicious!

Saturday: bird

Isn’t it convenient that I happen to have a bird living in my house? She’s a loud pain in the butt, but she and my husband were a two-for-one deal. What can ya do?

Sunday: me

Sad as it is to admit, this is me: a big old mess. Not really my life so much as my personality. I am messy, but I want to be neat. I have a need to be active, but I have no energy. My personality houses a lot of conflicting ideas, goals, feelings. It’s crazy, and if I could catch a glimpse up there, I’m sure it would look a little bit like my desk here.(Oh, and you can see a little piece of my head in the frame sticking out from behind the pile. lol)

Today is Monday, and my photo of today is : Someone who inspires me. I have to do some thinking on that one. And figure out if I can get a photo or if I have to be creative! I’ll get back to you on that one.

I hope everyone is having a lovely Monday. How was the weekend? Anyone have any good stories to tell?

Ten things to be happy about 3/19

I have a lot to be happy about at this point. The last few weeks…last week especially….were hellacious! I am so glad to be on the other side of them.

1. My to-do list at work is empty! Well, not entirely empty, but the four  major projects I HAD to get done ASAP are done. Check!

2. I got to wake up to this view this morning!Sure, we were snowed in all weekend. But we were at the vineyard, so we were in good company and we should be able to get the car out and go home tonight.

3. I get to sleep in my own bed tonight! I totally take that for granted when I don’t have it. And it’s not that I don’t LOVE mini-vacations, but there’s nothing quite like the feeling of falling asleep in your own bed.

4. I tried a few recipes from my new cookbook! I know, I’m lame for forgetting to take a photo, but I made the coconut orange bread pudding from my Blissful Bites cookbook. I also made the sweet polenta porridge and Jim made the hearty lentil soup. All of them were fabulous, but my favorite had to be the bread pudding. It was such a unique take on a classic dessert. I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone contemplating going vegan.

5. I got the cutest new shoes! I haven’t bought anything for myself in a long time. And in the shoe department, I am seriously lacking. I have no shoes to trompse around in the rain in, nor did I have any cute shoes for spring. So, like any girl would probably do, I went for cute over function. Winter is almost over, afterall! I’m not so sure I love the bottoms of them…they’re kind of weird, but I’ll wear them around the house a bit and see what I think. Aren’t they adorable?!

6. My husband is at work with me today! Part of being snowbound all weekend was that he was stuck with me, which means he is still stuck with me. He’s just sitting there watching YouTube videos while I work, but it’s still kind of nice to have him here.

7. I get to see my sister-in-law tonight! She doesn’t know it yet, I don’t think, but her husband is cutting Jim’s hair tonight (before his job interview tomorrow!), so we’ll be over there for a little bit tonight. I’m excited. We have a good time together. 🙂

8. As a result of #1, my office is getting very clean. It’s so much nicer to work in a clean office, and having nothing else to do, I have time to CLEAN!!

9. I think there’s a delicious slice of pumpkin pie on its way for me! I made chicken pot pie for dinner last night, and Ashley made the crust. Well she used her grandmother’s recipe, which is one of those that can’t be cut down in size, so with an extra 6 crusts, she made a pumpkin pie for dessert. And I’m not sure anyone makes better pumpkin pie than Ash does!

10. I have a massage tomorrow!I haven’t had once since, I believe, the last time I included it in my ten things post. I’m so excited! I need this like crazy!

I hope everyone is having a lovely Monday. What are you happy about today?
